STREET FOOD TO TRY IN MUMBAI IN THE YEAR 2024

The city of Mumbai which is known for being the city of dreams because of its glitz and glamour, has another title to its name – the city of street food. Mumbai is renowned for its endless amount of high-end fine dining establishments, unique themed cafes and trendy bars but don’t be fooled into thinking that Mumbai lacks amazing street food.

In fact, the city is teeming with khau galli’s serving an end number of varieties of street food, which caters to everyone be it a non-vegetarian or a vegetarian or a Jain. Mumbai streets has got everyone covered!

So, if you’re looking to tantalize your taste buds with budget-friendly yet delicious food, here’s a curated list of must-try street foods in Mumbai in 2024 that are sure to give you a delightful foodgasm experience.

  • Vada Pav

Vada Pav has been the heart of street food in Mumbai, which is more famously known as it’s very own burger! It consists of a deep-fried potato patty served in a bun along with chutneys and green chilies. Well, I love eating my vada pav with butter and dry garlic chutney with green chilies on the side.

Where to try? Anand (Vile Parle West) and Aram Vada Pav (Opposite CST station).

  • Tandoori and Kebabs

These are definitely crowd favourites and easily found at the street food stalls around the city. I would recommend you to go to Ayub’s in town and ditch the iconic Bademiya due to the recent reports of the FDA, in September 2023. Also, a must visit is Jai Jawan in Bandra West.

  • Pav Bhaji

As the history goes this dish was originated as fast lunch time dish for Mumbai textile mill workers which went on becoming the most served dishes in almost every restaurant in Mumbai.

Where to try? Appointment (Bonbon, 7 Bungalows), Swadesh (7 Bungalows) and Shree Siddhivinayak Fast Food (Juhu beach).

Even though Sardar Refreshments, Tardeo have been one of the iconic places for pav bhaji because of them serving a whole slab of Amul butter in every serving of this dish, however, it is slowly losing its charm.

  • Shawarma

This much-loved eastern dish too found its way to the streets of Mumbai and has become one of the most popular street foods of Mumbai due to its flavourful meat clubbed with sauces, French fries and veggies wrapped in flatbread, making it a wholesome pocket friendly meal!

My go to places to satisfy my craving for these are Carter’s Blue (multiple outlets) and Yalla Yalla (Andheri).

  • Chole Samosa

Yes, you read it right chole samosa! It’s one of the most deadly and delicious combinations which you will ever have. This dish is bursting with so many flavours and how!

Where to try?Guru Kripa (SIES college)

  • Momos

Momos though originally originated in Nepal, has not only become the most loved street food in Mumbai but are being loved world over! Momos come in a variety of options and fusions as well!

My personal go to place for momos is Suraj Lama (7 Bungalows), their steamed chicken momos and tandoori momos are made for your soul!

  • Bombay Sandwich

Street food of this city will be incomplete without its well-known Bombay sandwich. It has one of the most unique fillings like beetroot, tomato, cucumber, masala potato with lots of cheese and mint chutney. My favourite version of this sandwich is the grill one but you must try all of them plain, toasted and grill to know which one is your favourite.

Where to try? Sandwizzas (Santacruz West), Anand (Vile Parle west) and Chotu’s (Lokhandwala).

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and experience Mumbai truly by its street food and indulge in one of the most vibrant culinary adventure and do let me know what’s your favourite street food and where we can find it!
